italy, day 1

posted by Michael Piwonka 8:51 AM
Martha and I left for Italy on Monday, June 15. We were finally heading for the long-awaited trip! We scheduled our trip to casually follow Allie as the Charlotte Children's Choir toured the country.

We had a significant lay-over in Detroit on Monday, long enough that I was able to watch the US National Team lose to Italy, 3-1, in the 2009 Confederation's Cup. Even though they lost that game (and the next one against Brazil), it would be the beginning of an incredible run for the US team. (The US team actually lead 1-0 at halftime, though playing 1-man short after an early red card. While hoping for the best for the US, the thought occurred to me that we might encounter less than friendly hosts if the Americans held on against the Azzurri!)

The flight to Italy was comfortable, though I can never manage to sleep on airplanes. As we left Detroit in the evening, flying east, the sun came up soon after setting in the west, giving us a nice case of jet lag once we arrived Tuesday mid-morning.

random. arbitrary. completely unnecessary. yet refreshingly therapeutic.
