birthday party

Last weekend a friend and I threw a "dual" birthday party. Her birthday was a couple days prior to the party, and mine a few days after. And since our birthdays were so close to each other, throwing a party was the only sensible thing to do.

About 30 people showed up, and we had a lot of fun. The party had all the earmarks of a success: my stereo receiver shut down at one point due to overheating, several people were headed for a less than glorious next morning, and my kitchen floor was disgustingly sticky. But, nothing was broken, and everyone survived.

I received many compliments on the wall and ceiling colors in my house, but what had people really intrigued were the large blank canvases hanging on the walls. I've been intending to paint them for several months now, but just haven't gotten around to it.

Many people thought they represented some type of important artistic statement. Some asked if I minded if they did the same in their houses, as if I had a patent on this form of expression, which at its most basic level is simply a case of procrastination.

Next time I have a party I may do something profound like turning a chair upside down in the middle of the living room. I'm sure someone will identify the masterpiece immediately.

random. arbitrary. completely unnecessary. yet refreshingly therapeutic.
