you've been "BOO'ed"

Last night the kids and I delivered several anonymous treats to other houses in the neighborhood, leaving a goody bag of candy and Halloween trinkets on the front porch, ringing the doorbell and running off.

The goody bag contained a poem explaining that a Halloween spook, eager for something to do, "boo'ed" their house by leaving a gift on the front porch. The bag also contained directions to continue the gift-giving for two other neighbors that had not yet been "boo'ed". Finally, the bag had a large BOO sign the recipient could put on the front door, signalling that their house had already been "boo'ed".

The idea is to see how many houses end up with BOO signs on the front door before Halloween rolls around.

We had taken part in this game in our old neighborhood, and it's a lot of fun trying to figure out who left you the treat. It helps to build a sense of community in the neighborhood, but if someone doesn't elect to continue the chain of gift-giving, no harm done (it's like a chain letter, just a lot more fun, and without the threat of woe if the chain is broken).

Probably the most fun for me is watching the kids get an adrenaline rush as they ring the doorbell and flee, hoping to avoid detection; we then watch from the shadows to see if someone comes to the front door and finds the treat.

We had a lot of fun last night, and now we're going to watch the neighborhood to see how many signs start appearing on front doors.

random. arbitrary. completely unnecessary. yet refreshingly therapeutic.
