We joined Lisa and Phil and their kids at the Doubletree Hotel in downtown Houston to watch fireworks from the comfort of their 19th-story rooms.

The kids had a room to themselves, as the adults chatted in the adjoining room. We watched several other fireworks displays around Houston in the distance, but none compared to the impressive display right outside our floor-to-ceiling windows.

I was amazed to see that the fireworks included discharges in the shapes of cubes, hearts and smiley faces. I don't know how they do that, but it was great.

And believe me, there's nothing like watching fireworks at eye-level, without the misquitos, humidity, and porta-potty's. We simply turned up the music on the TV that was accompanying the fireworks, grabbed a cheesecake and beverage, adjusted the thermostat, and kicked back.

It was interesting to see how cars just simply stopped on Interstate 45 to watch. After the show, Phil and I went walking around downtown with the kids, as thousands of spectactors waited in traffic jams to go home.

Not a bad way to enjoy the show.

random. arbitrary. completely unnecessary. yet refreshingly therapeutic.
