mason's literacy progress

posted by Michael Piwonka 8:56 AM
The kids are staying with me this weekend, and we have been spending a great deal of time working on Mason's spelling and reading since he received mediocre marks on his last report card.

Allie has been very helpful, making flashcards and practicing words with Mason. I printed a word search with his currently-assigned words, and we've been writing them repeatedly so he can remember them better.

It must be a matter of concentration, but he does better remembering the more difficult words, and is more likely to misspell the easier words. Also, he does a better job of reading than he does at spelling the very same words he can read; I guess he figures out many of the words from context, without actually learning the words.

The bottomline is that he is doing better through repetition, and he is feeling much prouder of himself. We have to continue to work with him so he can catch up with his classmates.
