longhouse

We survived the longhouse trip this weekend! Actually, it couldn't have gone any better (except maybe we could have gotten a little more sleep last night, but even that wasn't too bad).

We stayed at Camp Thunderbird, which is just across the South Carolina border on Lake Wylie. The weather was fantastic, and there enough activities to exhaust both father and son (or daughter, as Indian Princesses also attended in addition to the Indian Braves).

Our tribe, now officially dubbed the Fighting Hawks, enjoyed riflery, canoeing, horseback riding, hiking, archery, various crafts, and playing games. We had a solemn gathering last night around a big bonfire to summon the Great Spirit; each tribe recited a humorous tribe chant (many weren't actually intended to be humorous!).

Mason particularly enjoyed archery; he seemed to have a natural inclination to it (he had done it before at a summer camp). I enjoyed the canoeing, which gave Mason and I some quiet time together on the lake.

We also visited a nature center, where Mason saw some large bird exhibits, held a snake, and played with a turtle.

The surroundings were beautiful, as a later-than-normal leaf changing gave us some beautiful colors to enjoy.

Mason and I took turns taking pictures during the trip, which I put in a photo album.

random. arbitrary. completely unnecessary. yet refreshingly therapeutic.
