swim team, part II

Mason was surprisingly reluctant to swim when the team started practicing this week. Last summer he was making promising progress in his swimming, even though he hadn't completely mastered it yet.

But at the start of this season he seemed to have regressed, being afraid to put his head under water.

I think the reason was because of a scare he had a couple weeks ago at a friend's pool. He and the friend got into a little trouble in the pool, and the friend's dad quickly jumped in the pool to pull them out before they got into serious trouble. Both kids were frightened by the ordeal.

I believe that the experience shook Mason's confidence.

This past weekend I spent a lot of time with Mason in the shallow end, slowly helping him start all over. He showed some progress, but was still far behind where he was at the end of last summer.

Well, today he must have decided it was safe to get back in the pool. With little fanfare, he started jumping back in and swimming close to the sides of the pool. In a few moments, he was doing cannonballs in the water.

When I got home from work he could hardly contain himself as he proudly exclaimed "I told you I could swim!"

random. arbitrary. completely unnecessary. yet refreshingly therapeutic.
