charlotte-mecklenburg school calendar

posted by Michael Piwonka 9:34 PM
This is a re-post from a couple years ago...if any Charlotte-area Google Calendar users want to add the Charlotte Meckenburg School calendar to their Google calendars, the URL is below.

To add it, click the dropdown next to the "Other Calendars" label on the main calendar page, then select "Add by URL".  Paste the URL into the textbox, and click "Add Calendar".

(I've added carriage returns to make the URL fit on the webpage nicely; please remove them before pasting into Google calendar.  You should end up with a long URL with no spaces or carriage returns in it.)

skiing trip

posted by Michael Piwonka 5:05 PM
Mason went skiing with the Boy Scouts this past weekend, to Beech and Sugar mountains, which are about 3 hours from Charlotte.

He definitely had a great time, and he wasn't too macho to say that he was quite scared when going down the black diamond runs.  He said that he couldn't make any turns on those slopes because he was too afraid, which in turn only made him go faster I'm sure.

But, on the other hand, you could hear some pride in his voice, as he described how he conquered those runs.  He is ready for any ski slope now (well, almost any).

hilton head

posted by Michael Piwonka 11:13 PM
Martha and I decided to spend this weekend in Hilton Head, South Carolina.  Today is her birthday, and mine is Tuesday, so I think we're establishing a tradition of enjoying a weekend away from Charlotte as our birthday present to each other.

The weather here today was rather chilly, with temperatures in the 40s and enough breeze to give us a shiver as we walked along the beach.  But morning clouds gave way to afternoon sunshine, providing us a beautiful day to enjoy.

We've been lazy, going to eat at unusual times, and spending a good amount of time simply reading or napping.  Just as planned.

billy elliot

Martha and I went to see Billy Elliot the Musical on Saturday.  I enjoyed the play for several reasons:

I have been to numerous musicals in my life, and I would have to rate this as one of the best, if not the best.  I certainly didn't expect to say that prior to seeing the show.

We enjoyed the show so much we've decided to start taking in more shows, and have purchased a mini-season pass for the upcoming season.

new year's eve

posted by Michael Piwonka 10:55 PM
Martha and I hosted a party at our house on New Year's Eve.  We jokingly dubbed it either a New Year's Eve party, or a wedding celebration, or a party for anything the attendees wanted to celebrate.  Regardless of the reason, the party was a lot of fun.

We had many friends come by throughout the evening; our kids were there also, accompanied by their friends. At midnight we popped the cork on some champagne, and tooted noisy horns, as tradition dictates.  With a kiss for good luck at the stroke of midnight, 2011 was off to a great start.

sold

posted by Michael Piwonka 10:45 PM
After 3 months on the market, in probably the worst real estate market in my lifetime, in the slowest time of the year for home sales, I sold my house!

Just a couple weeks after my wedding, I closed on my house on December 30.  All the pieces are falling into place perfectly.

All things considered, I feel that I was very fortunate to sell the house in this economy.  I purchased my house back in 2006, at perhaps the height of the real estate bubble.  While I was able to sell it for slightly more than I paid, I consider it as simply breaking even.

The house was in great shape, only being a few years old.  With the addition of designer-selected paint colors, and an impressive home theater, the house was desirable to the right buyer...one that I was lucky enough to have appear.

I have to give a shout out to my realtor, Melissa Brown of Helen Adams Realty.  She did a great job of marketing the house, and is very diligent in her job.

marriage!

posted by Michael Piwonka 10:31 PM
I'm married.

On Friday, December 17, 2010, Martha and I were married.

Originally, we had planned to get married in Blowing Rock, NC, on December 29th, but various reasons prompted us to go to the Justice of the Peace instead.  Martha's mom had recently been diagnosed with health issues, and Martha needed to quickly travel to upstate New York to assist with her mom's care.  Also, I was lucky to receive a contract on my house, and the potential buyers wanted to close before the end of December.   Rather than cause additional stress by including a wedding in the mix, we decided it was easiest for all to change the wedding date and venue.

Martha's three daughters, Gretchen, Laura and Anna, served as witnesses.  The ceremony, naturally, was simple and efficient, though still memorable.

Allie and Mason joined us all for a nice dinner at P.F. Chang's later that evening.  The dinner, just as the ceremony, was simple and intimate.

I'm a very lucky guy.

malware invasion

posted by Michael Piwonka 6:34 AM
Google's web analytics tools sent me an email on Monday saying that my website might be infected with malicious software.  They were able to identify a particular file for me that was suspicious.

The file was definitely something that I had never seen before, so I quickly deleted it.  I scanned my entire website directory, and removed a folder that was also unknown to me.

After changing my password, I requested another review of the site by Google, and it appears that all is well again.  I can only assume that somehow my password had been compromised.

more time with mason

posted by Michael Piwonka 8:55 AM
Mason will be spending a couple more nights a week with me for the foreseeable future.  We've decided that he has needs more time with his father so he can get a little more attention.  Living in a household that's predominately female leaves Mason yearning for some male-bonding.

I enjoy the opportunity to spend time with him, and since it will be on Sunday and Monday nights, we make sure homework is all ready for the next day.  I also will be attending his Monday night Boy Scouts meetings with more regularly now, which is also an interesting thing to do.

I think Allie likes the time alone also, and consequently appreciates Mason a little more when they're back together.
